相手(Aite)in Kendo 稽古(Keiko)

During the kendo keiko, aite is our opponent. The opponent is always trying very hard to hit our men (face), kote (hand), do (body) and sometimes tsuki (throat). And we defend and fight back.

In the process of keiko, we may see our aite as our opponent in our mind. By using the experience we learn in the keiko, we fight this opponent throughout our whole life. My first opponent of the day is the one who always tries to persuade me to wake up late in the morning despite the presence of very noisy alarm clock. Although I thought I had managed the opponent quite well recently, when I did not maintain zanshin , the opponent fought back immediately.

Keiko is a process where we train our mind and body. Every changes in process of mind and body needs to be clearly observed, experimented, practiced and understood so that we are able to implement these experience into our daily life. By doing so, We may receive the best gift out from kendo keiko.

Cheers! Have a great day!
